Metropolitan Detroit Chorale Season to Feature Works by Composer Karl Jenkins
The 2008-2009 concert season will find the Metropolitan Detroit Chorale preparing two works by contemporary composer Karl Jenkins. The Christmas concert will include A Celebration of Christmas, a collection of six carols, two written by Karl Jenkins and four arranged by him: In Dulci Jubilo; Silent Night; Lullay; Go Tell It On the Mountain; Sleep, Child of Winter; and Son of Maria. The highlight of the spring will be the Midwest Premiere of Stabat Mater. This new work by Jenkins had its World Premiere on March 15, 2008 in Liverpool. The first U.S. performance will be in January, 2009. The Metropolitan Detroit Chorale is happy to be able to continue its recent practice of bringing new works to the metro area. This will be the third premiere of a Jenkins composition by the Chorale following its Michigan Premiere of The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace (May, 2006) and its Midwest Premiere of Requiem (June, 2007). Like Jenkins’ earlier works, his Stabat Mater has a international flavor including instruments from other cultures and texts from a 13th century Roman Catholic poem, the Epic of Gilgamesh from 7th century BCE Babylonia, and Persian poetry, as well as new text written just for the work. It is sung in Arabic, Aramaic, Greek, and Hebrew as well as English and Latin.

Blue Cross Blue Shield Support Received

The Metropolitan Detroit Chorale has again been fortunated to receive sponsorship from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. The Chorale recently received word that it was the recipient of a $1,000 grant from BCBSM in support of the Chorale’s upcoming Masterworks concert featuring Mass of the Children by John Rutter. The grant is part of the Blues’ community support program and the Metropolitan Detroit Chorale certainly thanks Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan for its generosity. The Chorale also thanks Daniel Loepp, President and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan for his assistance.
